General

  • We currently don’t have anyone on this programme. We understand how strongly you feel about this and we are listening. There are clearly mixed views on voluntary work experience and we’re continuing to consult with all stakeholders to keep this matter under constant review.

  • Our first trial site at Guttersloh has been a great success for both Greggs and NAAFI. Greggs has put a number of roll out proposals to NAAFI to extend the offer to as many bases as possible and are waiting for confirmation of the route to be taken.

  • It is very common for retailers to have regional prices. This is because the costs of running a business can vary across different parts of the country and in certain locations, for example rent costs. We always keep our prices as low as possible for our customers.

  • All of our retail vacancies (including Saturday and Part-Time vacancies) are held at www.greggsfamily.co.uk. Please apply using this website.

  • We currently have a partnership with, Moto Hospitality to open around 30 Greggs sites within the MOTO estate. We have no plans to offer one off franchise shops but are interested in entering into partnerships with companies that can offer us the opportunity to take the Greggs Brand into locations where we cannot open company run shops. These locations may include travel hubs, universities and healthcare locations.

  • We’re available Monday – Friday from 9.00am to 5.00pm. Email us at getintouch@greggs.co.uk or call us on 0808 1473447. You can also write to us at Greggs PLC, Fernwood House, Clayton Road, Jesmond, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE2 1TL. We’ll aim to get back to you within 10 working days.

  • We’ve reluctantly changed the price of some of our food with very minor increases on certain products, due to the significant increase in some ingredients costs since the start of the year, as well as significant increases in fuel and energy costs. We’ll always try to keep our prices at great value for you, so instead of increasing the price of all our range, we’ve only changed the price of certain products. We still believe that even with these minor increases, our food offers fantastic quality at great value.

  • We haven’t altered the size of any of our savouries in the last year. Some minor changes were made in 2011 to help us make improvements in nutritional content by removing fat, salt, etc

Our Food

  • With recent issues in the food industry we’ve increased our rigorous testing even further. There are no traces of horsemeat in any of our products.

  • We don't currently offer sauce with our savouries. However, we are looking at sauce portions for the future.

  • We have already converted 100% of our liquid palm oil needs to CSPO and we require all our suppliers of palm oil to be members of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). We are actively working to substantially increase the proportion of CSPO we use and plan to have 65% of our Palm Oil sourced from sustainable plantations by the end of 2013, and 100% by the end of 2015.

Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO) is palm oil that has been grown on a plantation that was not deforested and converted to plantation after 2005, and that has been well managed with good environmental, social and economic standards.

  • We always try to meet customer demand and appeal to a wide range of tastes and preferences. We understand that some of our customers are looking for healthier options generally and we are reacting to this. For example, you can now buy porridge in our shops as part of our breakfast range. We have recently introduced pasta pots, salads, yoghurts and fresh fruit salads in over 1,000 of our shops. In our traditional products lines, we’ve removed butter from our sandwiches and where spread is used, this is now low-fat spread. We’ve switched to a reduced fat mayonnaise and introduced no mayo sandwiches (see labels for details). We have removed all hydrogenated fats and added trans fats from all of our food. We also have a programme to reduce salt in our food working towards to the Food Standards Agency (FSA) recommended salt reduction targets. We know that our customers don’t want us to compromise on the taste that they know and love, so we are very careful to make sure that any changes we make don’t impact on our customers’ enjoyment of our food.

  • Our mayonnaise is pasteurised and is suitable for pregnant women.

  • Currently, we don’t offer a Halal range. We get requests for many specialist ranges such as gluten-free and Halal and the challenge for us at Greggs is that most of our shops are very small with limited display space so we try to offer food that will appeal to everyone. We are continuously looking at what our customers are asking for to offer the food you want from Greggs.

  • Stotties are a traditional bread from the North East of England. They’re a heavy dough, round flat bread, baked on the oven bottom and are between 6-8 inches wide. We sell them as take home bread or as a sandwich carrier and they are only sold in the North East as a favourite particular to that region.

  • We’ve tried before to sell Stotties in other parts of the UK but found that customers elsewhere prefer regional breads from that area. We know that there are people from the NE living elsewhere who would love to be able to buy Stotties in other parts of the county but unfortunately demand outside of the North East and Cumbria is not high enough to make this viable. The trial of stotties in our shop in Staines is going really well, so we’ll keep an eye on demand and let you know if we are able to roll this out further.

  • We have a range of sandwiches and savouries which are meat free including Egg Mayonnaise, Cheese Savoury and Cheese and Tomato. We also have the Cheese & Onion Pasty and Cheese & Tomato Pizza, which are made solely with vegetarian ingredients and don’t contain any animal derivatives or animal rennet.

We always advise our customers that our non-meat food is produced in the same environment as food containing meat. Savouries are baked in the same shop ovens as our meat-based savouries; hence we do not advertise them as being vegetarian.

  • We try to cater to as wide a range of customers as possible. We continually listen to customer feedback and look to develop our food in line with our customer’ needs. We regularly develop and trial meat free products and if successful they remain part of the National range.

  • We are confident that our non-meat pasties and bakes do not contain meat. We make our own pasties and bakes in our own specialist bakeries, where we have strict segregation processes in place to prevent cross contamination. We have completed a rigorous testing regime that confirms that we do not have meat in our non-meat food. However due to our retail environment, we always advise that our non-meat pasties are baked in the same shop ovens as the rest of our range. Therefore we do not advertise them as being strictly vegetarian.

  • Unfortunately we’re unable to recommend any of our lines as suitable for people with allergies because our food is freshly baked and prepared in open bakery and shop environments so cross-contamination could inadvertently occur. However, if you’re a customer concerned about a specific ingredient, we can provide this information to you on request if you contact our Customer Care Team.

  • We have a national range which is sold everywhere in the country, so that customers who love our food can buy their favourite in any Greggs shop. We also understand that tastes do vary between regions and that our regional bakery heritage is important to customers, so we provide traditional regional favourites which vary across the country. Approximately 20% of the range in your local shop will be unique to your area and will be decided on to reflect local tastes and demand.

  • Customers tell us that as well as their favourites they want to try new ranges, so we do change our lines from time to time. We have seasonal items through the year and limited edition products in our sandwich range as well as rotating some of our savouries, so you get the chance to try new things! Sometimes tastes change and we find that products that once sold really well are not as popular as they used to be. We’re really keen to make sure that there are always things you love at Greggs. However, if you feel really strongly, let us know and we’ll have another look at it!

  • You’ve told us that you like mayonnaise on some of our sandwiches. We have introduced ‘no mayo’ sandwiches which are clearly labelled. In addition, if we have the ingredients and it’s not our busiest time of the day (lunchtime, 12noon – 2pm) and you’d really like your sandwich without mayonnaise, we will try and do this for you. Just ask at the counter.

  • As some recipes do vary by region, the nutritional information can vary from region to region, so the nutritional leaflet in our shops only contains information for our ranges which represent the majority of the products we sell. However, you can contact the Customer Care Team to request nutritional information for any Greggs products which they will be able to tell you straight away.

  • We sell savouries which are freshly baked in our shop ovens then put on the shelf to cool. We don’t keep our savouries in a heated environment, or use heat retaining packaging, or market them as hot, as they are simply freshly baked throughout the day then left to cool. As bakers we believe that baking our savouries fresh each day gives customers the best quality savoury. If the sausage rolls and pasties were kept hot after they had been baked, then they would be subject to VAT and the customer would have to be charged a higher price, in the same way that we charge VAT on our hot sandwiches which are kept in a heated cabinet and are subject to VAT.

  • As bakers we want our customers to have the freshest food possible, so we don’t carry over into the next day our sandwiches, savouries and some of our confectionery. We try to make sure there is enough food available for our customers right up until closing time, whilst at the same time we don’t bake too many savouries or make up too many sandwiches later in the day, to keep the amount of unsold food as low as possible. Where food that we can’t carry over is not sold, we have different arrangements across our shops:

    - A number of our shops have partnerships with local charities such as hostels and homeless shelters who collect our unsold food at the end of each day.

    - We have a partnership with an organisation called FareShare who collect unsold food sent from our shops back to our bakeries and distribute it on our behalf to disadvantaged people.

    - Where the technology is available, we send unsold food for “anaerobic digestion”, which is a new technology that converts food into an energy supply. This is something we are pursuing increasingly.

    - Some of our unsold food is sent for composting.

    - We do not send any unsold food to landfill or incinerators.

We would very much welcome any registered charities to get in touch with us should they have a need for our surplus food and if they are able to collect it direct from their nearest Greggs shop, please email us at getintouch@greggs.co.uk

Our Shops

  • We want to make Greggs a great shopping experience for our customers and card payment facilities have been made available. As this is a relatively new facility at Greggs, we are still building volumes of transactions that would make it possible to remove the minimum charge.

  • We have to charge more for a number of reasons. Firstly, VAT is applicable for a ‘sit down service’. In addition, our running costs are greatly increased in terms of additional team members, cutlery, tables, extra cleaning required, and so on, which unfortunately means it is more expensive to run a café operation. We are committed to offering great value to our customers both in our food to go and our café formats.

  • We want to be where our customers want us, so let us know and we’ll see if we can open near you - email getintouch@greggs.co.uk

  • We have identified that there’s still a strong opportunity for more shops in Great Britain, which can be supplied by our existing regional bakeries, so our priority at the moment is to deliver this expansion plan. We are however looking at how we could take Greggs outside GB.
