Children's cancer run

Now in its 28th year, the Greggs Children's Cancer Run has raised in excess of £4million for Children's Cancer Research in the North East of England.

The Greggs Children's Cancer Run began in 1982, when Chris Peacock, a young boy from the North East, was diagnosed with cancer of the kidney and given a 30% chance of survival. His school headmaster, Colin Gregg, wanted to do something positive to help make a difference, so he set up a fundraising run to help children who were in a similar situation.

From small beginnings of around 200 participants in the first run, the majority being pupils at King's School in Tyneside, the Children's Cancer Run now sees over 10,000 participants every year.

As the event is sponsored by Greggs, we are delighted to cover most of the expenses. Volunteers from our bakeries work extremely hard to provide free lunches for all participants which means all the money raised, through sponsorship of runners, goes to Children's Cancer Research.

The Children's Cancer Run is a 5-mile cross country family run and people of all ages participate every year in the name of Children's Cancer Research. The event is always a fantastic day out for all of the family with lots of entertainment. Runners receive a medal for their efforts as they cross the finish line, as well as a free T-shirt and a Greggs picnic!

Newcastle upon Tyne was originally the only city in the UK to host this annual event, but in 2010 similar runs are taking place in Manchester and Cardiff.

The 28th Children's Cancer Run will take place on Sunday 9th May 2010 at Gosforth Park Racecourse, Newcastle Upon Tyne. For more information about the Children's Cancer Run visit the charity's official website: www.neccr.org.uk.
