The Greggs Pledge: What you need to know

One year ago, we published the Greggs Pledge.

The Pledge is a promise to our customers, and to ourselves, because we’re not only here to make tasty bakes (though we are very good at that!) we’re also determined to help make the world a better place.

So you know we mean business, let’s take a look at what we’ve been doing over the last 12 months:

Our Breakfast Clubs make a difference

We’ve been providing a free breakfast to children in need for more than two decades. We know that hungry children find it harder to concentrate at school so we want to make sure as many kids as possible get a good start. By the end of 2021, we had 686 Breakfast Clubs up and running across the country which means we provided 8.5 million meals. And now you can help too! Support us by adding a donation to the Breakfast Club in shops or donate online.

Opening more Greggs outlet shops

Everyone should be able to afford quality food.  Our Outlet shops are helping people to stretch their money further. Last year, our Outlet customers bought 1.1 million sweet products, 1.1 million sandwiches and 1 million savoury products. By 2025, we’ll have 50 Greggs Outlet shops, which sell our food at a cheaper cost and give a share of the profits to the local community.

Food waste? Lets bin it!

Our food is delicious and should never be wasted. That's why we donate unsold food to charities, give it to customers at a discount through our outlet shops and offer it at a greatly reduced price through the Too Good To Go app. In 2021, we donated over 1,000 tonnes of food to over 1,200 charity partners which redistributed it to people in need.

Upping our healthy choices

We might be famous for our Sausage Rolls and Bakes, but we’re starting to get a bit of a rep for being great at salads and soups too. So far, we’ve made 32% of the items on our shelves healthier choices and by the end of 2022, 30% of all new products we create be ‘healthier choices’.

2. Protecting our planet

Using less packaging

So far we’ve joined the On The Pack Recycling Label scheme to make recycling communications easier to understand. We have pledged to cut the weight of packaging we use by a quarter - including bags, bottles and delivery packaging.

Future thinking shops

We have created a sustainable template store design, as well as thinking about how we fit out shops and power them. During 2022 we will open our first Eco-Shop using our new template and by the end of the year, we are aiming to apply what we’ve learned to 250 shops.

Let's go carbon neutral

By 2025, we’ll be on our way to achieving carbon neutrality by using 100% renewable energy. We aim to be Net Zero by 2040 – a decade earlier than the UK Government’s plan.

3. Being a better business

Embracing diversity

At Greggs, we love our communities and we want our everyone to feel welcome, customers and colleagues alike. In 2021, 500 managers attended an Inclusive Leadership workshop and we also started to cascade this to our teams. We want everyone to feel at home whatever their background, preferences or beliefs. By 2025 our workforce will reflect the communities we serve.

Sustainable supply chain

Here at Greggs we're a caring bunch, that goes for the planet and our communities too. It's important to us to have sound social, ethical and environmental practices and choose suppliers who share these values.

Protecting animal welfare

Animal welfare is important to us at Greggs: we expect all our meat, fish, dairy products and eggs to come from animals that have been treated well. In 2021, we developed a clear roadmap to improve our performance to reach Tier 1 of the Business Benchmark on Farm Animal Welfare. By 2025, we will secure and maintain Tier 1 in the BBFAW Animal Welfare standard.
